Almodovar, Pedro (Translated by Kirk Anderson) . PEDRO ALMODOVAR: PATTY DIPHUSA AND OTHER WRITINGS. London, England: Faber & Faber, 1992. Hardcover. First Edition/First Printing. 155 pages. Fine/Fine. Signed.

The author/filmmaker's debut collection of prose pieces. Now considered a contemporary cult classic. The first appearance of the title in English. Precedes and should not be confused with all other subsequent editions. Originally published in Spain in 1991, it was published in an extremely small and limited print run as a hardcover original only in English when the author was not yet the global sensation he is today. "These irresistibly funny pieces about the Golden Age of Madrid pop, punk, comics, and general frivolity were written during the 1980's, when Almodovar came of age as a filmmaker. Inspired in part by Andy Warhol's films, the title story features the adventures of a spunky star. The eponymous Patty, a self-absorbed young woman devoted to pleasure and in search of fame, breezes through the Madrid underground, unfazed by rape, drugs, and encounters with men and women of all sexual persuasions. Patty's innocence - and Almodovar's genius - makes these often tasteless scenes funny. The irrepressible author cannot resist inserting himself as a character in the section entitled 'Filler', which contains some short sketches, a discussion about the importance of Madrid in his films, a self-interview, and tongue-in-cheek predictions for the 1990's. His charming autobiographical essay, 'Advice On How to Become An Internationally Famous Filmmaker', recounts the steps he took to find his avocation. Almodovar's quick wit, affable writing style, and refusal to take himself and the film community seriously infuse this collection with originality" (Publisher's blurb). One of the world's most influential "culture heroes", this is a "must-have" title for Pedro Almodovar film aficionado/collectors. This copy is very prominently and beautifully signed in black pen on the title page by Pedro Almodovar. Laid-in is a Souvenir Postcard, "Viva Pedro", printed to commemorate the filmmaker's major retrospective in New York City, which Almodovar attended, and through which this signed copy was obtained. This is one of very few signed copies of the First British Edition still available online and is in especially fine condition: Clean, crisp, and bright, a beauty. A rare signed copy thus. One of the greatest living writer/filmmakers. A fine collectible copy. . ISBN 0571129161. $500.00
