Artist Book. Limited Edition of 2000 copies. An elegant production by Visionaire: Regular-sized volume format in square shape. Pristine-white softcovers with black titles on the cover, as issued. Photographs by Bruce Weber. Text excerpts culled from the novels of D. H. Lawrence. Original art by Frank Stanley. Printed on thick coated stock paper and vellum to the highest standards. Protective plastic sleeve. Without DJ, as issued. Presents Bruce Weber's collection of male nude photographs beautifully interspersed with original art by Frank Stanley, in a quietly moving tribute to the work of D. H. Lawrence. It is the homoeroticism in D. H. Lawrence's work, often played down and dismissed outright by literary critics and readers, that inspired Bruce Weber to create the Artist Book. "In the context of Weber's catalogue of publications, this delicate volume features a unique construction. Sixteen black-and-white and three color plates are juxtaposed with selections from 'Lady Chatterley's Lover', 'Women in Love', and 'Sons and Lovers'. Adjacent pages within the volume are interspersed with illustrated vellum sheets that play off the naturalism and sensuality of the photographs and text" (Publisher's blurb). There are no women in love in this Artist Book, but even women will respond to the hushed, dreamy romanticism of the imagery. The book's impeccable production values will impress the most discriminating collector, and of course, Bruce Weber's cult following will be moved and delighted by its celebration of the beauty of the male form. A "must-have" title for Bruce Weber collectors. This copy is very boldly and beautifully signed in black fountain pen on the title page by Bruce Weber. It is also neatly and beautifully signed in black fountain pen underneath Weber's signature by Frank Stanley. Weber and Stanley made a very rare appearance at the Basel Art Fair Miami 2007 to launch and sign a very limited number of copies of the book, most of which will remain in private collections. This title sold out shortly after publication and is now very highly collectible. This is the only signed copy of the Limited Edition available online, is in a protective plastic sleeve, and has no flaws, a pristine beauty. Signed copies (not the fakes) have occasionally turned up online and one copy sold at a European auction for $1200, almost twice as much as this impeccable copy. A rare signed copy thus. 19 plates. Bruce Weber's "O Rio de Janeiro", the sexiest photography book ever published, was selected as one of the "Seminal Photography Books" in the "Book of 101 Books". One of finest living American photographers. A flawless collectible copy. (SEE ALSO OTHER BRUCE WEBER TITLES IN OUR CATALOG). ISBN 1888645911. $700.00
