Campion, Jane & Campion, Anna. HOLY SMOKE. New York City, NY: British Shell Publishing Pty. Limited, 1999. Hardcover. First Edition/First Printing. 261 pages. As New/As New.

The authors' debut novel. The first appearance of the title in the United Kingdom. Precedes and should not be confused with all other subsequent editions. A dual debut for filmmaker Campion and her sister Anna, who offer an account of a tormented love/hate affair that transpires between a kidnapped cult member and her "de-programmer". Exit counselors, a cross between a psychotherapist and a secret agent, specialize in forcibly removing people from cults and reorienting them to the real world. The cult member and de-programmer fall madly in love. The premise and narrative are familiar but the Campion sisters' narration is fresh and deft, breathing life into them. Jane Campion is an incurable romantic. Her entire oeuvre is grounded in the conviction that passionate, even obsessive, erotic love is the sole reason for being. The basis of a very fine film by the author, with Harvey Keitel and Kate Winslet. A "must-have" title for Jane Campion collectors. This is an Import title, had a very small and limited print run, and has been out-of-print as a hardcover for a very long time. This is one of very few copies of the First British Edition still available online and has no flaws, a pristine beauty. A scarce copy thus. Jane Campion was Winner of the Academy Award for Best Director for "The Piano". One of the most brilliant living filmmaker/writers. A flawless copy.
