Parr, Martin. MARTIN PARR: COMMON SENSE. Stockport, England: Dewi Lewis Publishing, 1999. Hardcover. First Edition/First Printing. Unpaginated. As New. Signed.

Landmark retrospective collection of photographs. Now considered a contemporary photography classic, it remains Martin Parr's single most popular and influential title. The first and only edition. A brilliant production by Martin Parr: Oversize-volume format. Pictorial hard boards with red and black titles on the cover and multi-colored titles on the spine, as issued. There is no text. Printed on thick coated stock paper in the United Kingdom to the highest standards. Without DJ, as issued. Published on the occasion of the global exhibition, inaugurated at Rocket Gallery London on March 10, 1999, and shown in 43 galleries worldwide on the same month, using color xeroxes. Presents some of the photographer's finest and most representative images, a feast for the senses, not just our eyes, that also offer food for thought. The worldwide exhibition was done not for artistic vanity but to show that these are the things human beings increasingly have in common with one another in a global consumer culture that threatens to destroy local singularities and replace them with "the bland blanket of uniformity with which an indiscriminate culture of kitsch has smothered us" (Martin Parr). One comes away with uneasy yet undeniable feelings about the way we live now because Martin Parr's observations are acute and true, his eyes sharp and "spot-on", and most important, his own feelings are just as ambivalent as ours. "While he erases the potential for any social interaction and the often cruel and objectifying nature of his documentary practice continues, he does at least suggest that he too can never really remain outside this global consumer frenzy" (Mark Durden). Parr is an ironist (who is often mistaken for being a satirist) whose oblique, indirect, and witty approach leaves a strong aftertaste. It is not possible to understand the art and photography of our time without taking stock of Martin Parr's work and achievement. His most successful title, this is a "must-have" title for Martin Parr collectors. This copy is very prominently and beautifully signed in blue pen on the second image by Martin Parr. This is an Import title, has been out-of-print for a very long time, and is now highly collectible. This is one of very few signed copies still available online and has no flaws, a pristine beauty. A very scarce signed copy thus. 160 color plates. The most influential and most important living British photographer. A flawless collectible copy. (SEE ALSO OTHER MARTIN PARR TITLES IN OUR CATALOG).
