Erwitt, Elliott. ON THE BEACH. New York City, NY: W. W. Norton & Company, 1991. Hardcover. First Edition/First Printing. 127 pages. Fine/Fine.

Retrospective collection of photographs. The "prequel" and companion volume to the photographer's "Between The Sexes". The true First Edition. Precedes and should not be confused with all other subsequent editions. A brilliant production by Elliott Erwitt: Oversize-volume format. Orange cloth boards with titles on cover and spine, as issued. Photographs and text by Elliott Erwitt. Printed on thick coated stock paper to the highest standards. In pictorial DJ with black titles on the cover and spine, as issued. Presents some of the finest and most representative pictures by the great Magnum photographer from a lifetime of taking pictures on the beach. Elliott Erwitt raids a treasure trove of images to capture the bittersweet subject of how men and women relate to each other. All of the encounters take place on the eponymous place, where the thrice-married photographer has spent a lot of time, eventually meeting one of his wives. Of all the most open and public spaces, the beach has a singular erotic allure: One can move about and preen freely, cruise, and engage in sight-seeing of people with very little clothes on, something one cannot do downtown or in a bookstore. It is said that more flirtation and actual sex happen on the beach than in any other place, except perhaps the bedroom. This fact is beautifully captured by the photographer with his characteristically dry wit and keen eye. All of the pictures, beautifully reproduced in duotone, are technically and artistically accomplished, even the most casual snapshot. "Erwitt presents himself as a voyeur with a purpose, a lensman dedicated to capturing glimpses of our shared human condition. That Erwitt has never tired of the male-female chase is obvious" (Kirkus Reviews). If Woody Allen spent more time on the beach, his work might have looked like these wonderful images. A beauty, this is a "must-have" title for Elliott Erwitt collectors. This presentation copy is very boldly and beautifully signed, placed, and dated in black pen on the title page by the photographer: "For Bill Deodato, Elliott Erwitt New York 24 Sept. 1996". The recipient is a well-established photographer in his own right. This title has been out-of-print for a very long time and is now collectible. This is the only such signed and inscribed copy of the true First Edition available online and is in especially fine condition: Clean, crisp, and bright, a beauty. A rare, one-of-a-kind signed copy thus. One of the greatest photographers of the 20th century. A fine collectible copy. (SEE ALSO OTHER ELLIOTT ERWITT TITLES IN OUR CATALOG).
