Burroughs, William S. (Author) & Hibbard, Allen (Editor). CONVERSATIONS WITH WILLIAM S. BURROUGHS: LITERARY CONVERSATIONS SERIES. Jackson, MS: University Press Of Mississippi, 1999. Hardcover. First Edition/First Printing. 234 pages. As New.

The author's collection of interviews. Published in an extremely small and limited print run of 500 copies by a University Press as part of the now-legendary "Literary Conversations" Series. This First Hardcover Edition was sold to public libraries only and was never reissued. Should not be confused with the much more common Softcover Edition. The edition is very beautifully produced in bright yellow hard boards with black cloth overboards and gilt titles embossed on the spine. Printed on thick archival stock paper in the United States to the highest standards, it was issued without a DJ. Presents in the most collectible format possible a representative selection of interviews conducted by various writers, journalists, and scholars with the author. Gives a rich, complex, and lively overview of both the life and mind of one of America's most important writers. Presented in chronological order, the interviews cumulatively amount to an absorbing account of one of the greatest literary journeys of the 20th century, which is the explicit intention of the publisher with each writer who is included in the now-legendary Series. Burroughs was not a public figure/activist in the Norman Mailer mold, but he had the uncanny ability (in a way that Mailer himself acknowledged he lacked) to describe America's (and Mankind's) ultimate predicaments in concrete, pithy pronouncements that reflected his lifelong concerns as a writer: The collusion between science and state, the danger of totalitarianism in its present form of uncontrolled technology, and the prospect of annihilation through nuclear war. "Suppose the people in the Pentagon could condition people to believe in what they believed in - or what they, the Pentagon, pretend to believe in - and turn everyone into 'decent' Americans. That would be horrible. This control would be more than just a case of pressing this button here and this button there" (William S. Burroughs). One of the greatest Series of its kind ever undertaken in our time, this is a "must-have" title for William S. Burroughs completists. This title has been out-of-print as a hardcover for a very long time and is now highly collectible. This is one of extremely few copies of the First Hardcover Edition still available online and has no flaws, a pristine beauty. Almost all other copies available online are the Softcover Edition, in subsequent printings. A rare copy thus. One of the greatest American writers of the 20th century. A flawless collectible copy.
