Spender, Stephen. THREE VERSIONS FROM THE GERMAN. London, England: Self-Published, 1955. Softcover. First Edition/First Printing. Unpaginated. Fine. Signed. Gold-paper wrappers slightly rubbed and creased .

The author's first Limited Edition publication. One of Stephen Spender's most scarce titles. Limited Edition of 100 numbered and signed copies. Privately printed by the great poet and his wife as a holiday present for their friends. A beautifully produced book: Pocket-size volume format. Gold softcovers with black titles pasted on, as issued. Text by Stephen Spender. Without DJ, as issued. Each copy was numbered and inscribed by the author and signed by him and his wife, Natasha Spender. Presents three magnificent translations of well-known poems by the great German poets Stefan George and Hugo von Hofmannsthal, who were major influences on Stephen Spender's own poetry. An absolute "must-have" title for Stephen Spender collectors. This copy is Number 66, and is very prominently and beautifully signed and inscribed on the Limitation Page by the author: "To Alan and Jennifer, With Christmas and New Year Love from Stephen and Natasha". The inscription was written and signed by the author in black ink-pen. Natasha Spender signed her own name in blue pen. This is one of very few copies that have survived of this marvellous gem. The book is very beautiful but also quite delicate and easily misplaced. Spender scholars believe only a handful of this book remain. A very rare signed copy thus. One of the finest British poets of the 20th century. A fine collectible copy. (SEE ALSO OTHER STEPHEN SPENDER TITLES IN OUR CATALOG). $250.00
