Niffenegger, Audrey. HER FEARFUL SYMMETRY. New York City, NY: Scribner, 2009. Hardcover. First Edition/First Printing. 406 pages. As New/As New.

The author's second novel. Limited Edition of 4000 signed copies, as stated. Precedes the British Edition and should not be confused with the regular trade edition and copies of the latter that are signed on a tipped-in page (also issued by the publisher). What sets the Collector's Edition apart is that in terms of production values, it is superior in every respect to the regular trade edition. The concept and design elements are by Audrey Niffenegger herself (the design of the regular trade is by Rex Bonomelli). In stark contrast to the bright, tin-foil sheen of the trade edition (which is brilliant as well), the author/artist has adopted an austerely elegant black/white/red color scheme that emphasizes the novel's creepiness: Black cloth boards with red titles embossed on spine; black gilt page edges; and a pictorial DJ design that is based on an original bird painting by Niffenegger. The six black birds ("Six for Death") as well as the titles on the cover and spine are "de-bossed", resulting in one of the most stunningly beautiful DJ designs we have ever seen. The text is printed on thick, uncoated stock paper in the United States to the very highest standards. Presents Audrey Niffenegger's novel in a Collector's Edition format. The title alludes to William Blake's "The Tyger" (from "Songs of Experience"), one of the greatest poems in the English language: "Tyger! Tyger! Burning bright / In the forests of the night, / What immortal hand or eye, / Dare frame thy fearful symmetry?". A haunting ghost story/romance, it is her most fully realized work in the Romantic/Gothic vein that characterizes her art as well as her prose. "The endurance of love animates this story set in Highgate Cemetery London. When Elspeth Noblin dies of cancer, she leaves her estate, including an apartment overlooking the graveyard, to the twin daughters of her twin sister, from whom she has been estranged for twenty years. When Valentina and Julia show up to claim their inheritance, they soon discover that Elspeth is still in residence, in ghostly form. Niffenegger has a knack for taking the Romantic into the realm of creepiness, and she constructs a taut mystery around the secrets to be found in Elspeth's diaries and the lengths to which she will go to reunite with her younger lover. It's no small achievement that the revelations are both organic and completely unexpected" (The New Yorker Magazine). Readers who fell in love with her breakthrough debut, "The Time Traveler's Wife", will be spellbound again. "Beautiful prose. Literature that will last" (The Denver Post). A "must-have" edition for Audrey Niffenegger completists. This copy is one of the Collector's Edition, and it is very prominently and beautifully signed in black pen on the publisher's tipped-in page by Audrey Niffenegger. She also very prominently and beautifully signed the copy in black pen on the title page itself. The title-page signature was obtained in person through Niffenegger's Chicago gallery signing, making it that much more special. All other copies of the Collector's Edition available online are signed on the tipped-in page only. This title is an instant collectible. This is the only such double-signed copy of the Collector's Edition available online and has absolutely no flaws, a pristine beauty. A rare signed copy thus. One of the finest living American artist/writers. A flawless collectible copy. (SEE ALSO OTHER AUDREY NIFFENEGGER TITLES IN OUR CATALOG). ISBN 1439165947. $150.00
