Introduction by the great playwright/novelist/screenwriter David Mamet. Original 10 X 8 inch silver-gelatin print encased in its own protective sheet and laid into the slipcase. Gray cloth slipcase with photographic reproduction pasted on one side. Printed on thick coated stock paper in the United States to the highest standards. In publisher's original shrinkwrap. Without DJ, as issued. Published on the occasion of the retrospective exhibition of the same name held at the Stephen Daiter Gallery Chicago from March 9 through May 26, 2007. Presents a representative and delectable sampling of Art Shay's huge body of work, culled from an incredible output of over 25, 000 published photographs, many of which are now in the Permanent Collection of National Portrait Gallery of Art Washington, DC. The catalog includes classic images that have previously appeared (notably the iconic Nelson Algren photographs) as well as images that appear for the first time in catalog form. It ends heartbreakingly with "Harmon In The Snow, 1955", a portrait of his son (and Nelson Algren's godson), who died in 1972 at the age of 21. "Art Shay's photography shakes you up, sets you down gently, pats you on the head, and then kicks you in the ass" (Roger Ebert). A "must-have" edition for Art Shay collectors. This copy is one of the Limited Edition, indicated as such on the Front Limitation Page, and is very boldly and beautifully signed in black pen on the title page by Art Shay. It is also very prominently and beautifully signed in black pen on his Contribution by David Mamet. Art Shay signed every copy of the Limited Edition, but Mamet signed very few of them. Laid-in is a 10 X 8 inch silver-gelatin print of "Nelson Algren Amuses A New Friend, 1949", which is also very prominently and beautifully studio-stamped, numbered, and signed in black pen on verso by Art Shay. The image appears on Page 4 and is the very first plate of the catalog. Art Shay made four original-print choices for the Limited Edition, this being one of his most iconic Nelson Algren photographs. This title was not commercially sold and is now highly collectible. This is the only copy available online, is still in the publisher's original shrinkwrap, and has no flaws, a pristine beauty. Its superior production values plus a great print will ensure that the Limited Edition's value will not only keep but keep going up. A rare signed copy thus. 45 plates, 1 original print. One of the finest American photographers of the 20th century. A flawless collectible copy. (SEE ALSO OTHER ART SHAY AND LEE BALTERMAN TITLES IN OUR CATALOG). $500.00
