Pierson, Jack. JACK PIERSON: ALL OF A SUDDEN. New York City, NY: PowerHouse Books, 1995. Hardcover. First Edition/First Printing. Unpaginated. Fine.

Artist Book. Now considered a contemporary erotic photography classic. Limited Edition of 5000 copies. Precedes and should not be confused with all other subsequent editions, particularly the Softcover Edition. The hardcover is now scarce. A stunningly beautiful production by Jack Pierson and Tony Morgan: Regular-sized volume format. Pictorial hard boards with titles on the cover and spine, as issued. Photographs by Jack Pierson. There is no text. Printed on thick coated stock paper by EBS in Verona, Italy to the highest standards. Without DJ, as issued. Juxtaposes Jack Pierson's "bleed" color photographs with work in other media as well as those he has found in the urban landscape by unknown others. Drawings, sign-lettering word pieces, and installations are beautifully and tellingly interspersed with the artist's male nudes and still life photographs. Animate and inanimate alike feel like "lost-and-found" objects of the artist/photographer's searching eye. "Sensual, seductive, sad, sly, and initially looking like snapshots from a road trip gone awry, these images are painfully unspectacular evocations of feelings of loss, longing, life, and love. Simultaneously romantic and cynical, the contiguous borderless images, sometimes dreamily overexposed, map a mysteriously intimate journey that only Pierson fully understands, though he offers not a word of explanation. The impressionistic landscapes seem to present an evanescence of hope and invite the viewer's own emotional response" (Vince Aletti). Admirers and collectors of the visual poet of the "Forever Lost Generation"/"Generation X" will find some of Pierson's most piercingly acute evocations of contemporary America and his own complex inner, peripatetic, and erotic life well-represented in this now-classic collection. Its contribution to the expressive and narrative possibilities of photography is rivalled only by Nan Goldin's. While Goldin's images are raw and gritty, Pierson's are serene and lyrical even at their most desolate. A "must-have" title for Jack Pierson collectors. This copy is very prominently, beautifully, and uniquely signed, dated (in the year of publication), and inscribed in gold marker on the front board cover itself by the artist/photographer: "Best wishes, Jack Pierson (star symbol) '95". Pierson also drew in matching gold marker a moustache (and chin stubble) on the cover model. The recipient is named. Signed copies of Jack Pierson's books are extremely scarce because he does not do signings. This title has been out-of-print as a hardcover for a very long time and is now highly collectible. This is the only such signed and inscribed copy of the Limited Edition available online, is one of the most beautiful such copies we have ever seen, and is in especially fine condition: Clean, crisp, and bright, a beauty. A rare, one-of-a-kind signed copy thus. One of the most brilliant living American artist/photographers. A fine collectible copy. (SEE ALSO OTHER JACK PIERSON TITLES IN OUR CATALOG).
