Collection of photographs presented as an Artist Book. Now considered a contemporary classic. The true First Edition. Precedes and should not be confused with all other subsequent editions. Published in a very small and limited first print run as a softcover original only. An austerely elegant production by Robert Frank and Gerhard Steidl: Regular-sized volume format. Pictorial softcovers with photographic reproduction in front and titles on the cover and spine, as issued. Photographs by Robert Frank. There is no text. Printed in quadrotone on thick coated stock paper using four-color matte inks and Polaroid spot varnish in Gottingen, Germany to absolutely the highest standards. In matching wraparound pictorial DJ slipcase that is open on both ends, as issued. Presents and reproduces Robert Frank's Polaroid work, as assembled by the photographer in a notebook-style Artist Book (the original notebook remains in Frank's possession). Steidl deserves credit for ensuring that this Facsimile Edition retains as much as possible the subtle visual and tactile beauties of the original. "In November, 1991, Robert Frank went to Beirut on a commission to photograph the city's devastated downtown in the aftermath of the Lebanese Civil War (1975-1990). He also made Polaroids of the city and its environs which, on his return home, he stowed away in his studio. It was only many years later that he considered those images again, and used them to create a sketchbook's worth of Polaroid collages. A facsimile of his notebook, 'Come Again', shows how Robert Frank has worked almost exclusively with Polaroids in recent years, exploring the collage and assemblage possibilities of the instant photograph" (Gerhard Steidl). Once again, Robert Frank's images of a devastated land capture in a rigorous documentary format a universal human tragedy as well as his own personal turmoil and pain. "He can portray real pain and capture profound depths of human emotion better than almost any other photographer; indeed, better than almost any other artist in any medium" (Martin Parr and Gerry Badger). An absolute "must-have" title for Robert Frank collectors. This copy is very prominently and beautifully signed in black ink-pen on the title page by Robert Frank. The photographer is notoriously averse to any kind of signing, but he made a very rare public appearance in New York City in conjunction with the book's publication. He signed copies for some people who waited patiently in line then abruptly and inexplicably left before he could sign the rest. This title is now very highly collectible. This is the only signed copy available online, is still in its original wrappers, and has absolutely no flaws, a pristine beauty. Signed Robert Franks are rare, command as much as $20, 000 online even if they are not in fine condition, and will always keep their value. A very rare signed copy thus. 24 quadrotone plates. Three of Robert Frank's books were selected as among the greatest photography books in "The Photobook". One of the greatest photographers of the 20th century. A flawless collectible copy.
