Luster, Deborah (Photographer); Dostoyevsky, Fyodor; Sebald, W.G. & Wright, C. D. (Contributions). TOOTH FOR AN EYE: A CHOROGRAPHY OF VIOLENCE IN ORLEANS PARISH. Santa Fe, NM: Twin Palms Publishers, 2011. Hardcover. First Edition/First Printing. 64 pages. As New.

Artist Book. Collection of circular photographs juxtaposed with crime records. Deluxe Edition of 26 numbered and signed copies. Should not be confused with the Limited Edition. An austerely elegant production by Jack Woody: Oversize-volume format. Pictorial hard boards with titles on the spine, as issued. Photographs and text by Deborah Luster. Text fragments by Fyodor Dostoyevsky, W. G. Sebald, and C. D. Wright appended at the end. Original 16 X 15 inch gallery print-sized gravure print encased in its own black folio and laid into box. Pale gray pictorial clamshell cloth box. Produced in the United States to the very highest standards. Without DJ, as issued. Presents the sequel and companion volume to Deborah Luster's "One Big Self". If the latter consisted of portraits of criminal/prisoners, the present collection is a record of crime scenes juxtaposed indispensably with a description of the crime that took place. If "One Big Self" gave criminal/prisoners a human face, "Tooth For An Eye" gives the otherwise nondescript crime scene a human trace. Luster reproduces the photographs as every camera actually takes them: A circle called the iris (as with one's eyes), which harks back to 19th-century portraiture (and even cinema), reminding us that all photographs are taken as the eye sees it before it is filled out and printed as a 4 X 5 square. "Explores the city in a new way, creating a compelling portrait in the form of a photographic archive of contemporary and historic homicide sites. Explores the themes of loss and remembrance in a series of photographs that offer an opportunity for the viewer to enter deeper into the idea of the city, a place where life and death coexist, neither free of the other's influence" (Publisher's blurb). A "must-have" title for Deborah Luster collectors. This copy is one of the Deluxe Clamshell Box Edition, indicated as such on the Back Limitation Page, and it is very prominently and beautifully signed in black ink-pen by Deborah Luster. Laid-in is an original gravure print, also very prominently and beautifully numbered and signed in pencil on verso by the photographer. This edition is an instant collectible. This is one of very few copies still available online and has absolutely no flaws, a pristine beauty. A very scarce signed copy thus. 30 duotone plates, 1 original print. One of the greatest living American photographers. A flawless collectible copy. (SEE ALSO OTHER DEBORAH LUSTER TITLE IN OUR CATALOG). ISBN 1931885982. $850.00
