Smalley, Luke. EXERCISE AT HOME. Santa Fe, NM: Twin Palms Publishers, 2007. Hardcover. First Edition/First Printing. 48 pages. As New.

Collection of color photographs. Now considered a contemporary photography classic. Deluxe Clamshell Box Edition of 50 numbered and signed copies. Should not be confused with the Limited Edition of 1000 copies. The Deluxe Edition is now rare. An austerely elegant production by Luke Smalley, Jack Woody, and Jonathan Stephenson: Oversize-volume format. Pictorial hard boards with titles on the spine, as issued. Photographs by Luke Smalley. There is no text. 10 X 8 inch color print encased in its own black folio and laid into the box. Red-orange cloth clamshell box. Printed on thick coated stock paper in Korea to the highest standards. In publisher's original shrinkwrap. Without DJ, as issued. Presents Luke Smalley's companion volume to his ground-breaking debut, "Gymnasium", an all-new portrait sequence of athletic young men from Pennsylvania. It seems the unlikeliest thing: Exercise as the emblem of masculine beauty and eroticism. The images are cool and rigorously formal in a manner that recalls August Sander and at the same time, hot and unbearably sexy in the manner of Bruce Weber. "Revisits the themes and ideas that resonated in 'Gymnasium'. Investigates the small-town interiors and landscapes which are the settings for his portraits of young athletes. Color photographs, inspired by a more innocent era, depict exercises which combine whimsy with the inexplicable" (Jack Woody). The men are smooth-skinned, blond, blue-eyed, all-American, with close-cropped hair and elaborate drawings of Classical athletes on their hairless chests. They represent the physical ideal that Willoughby and Weaver celebrated in their classic 1947 book on the development of American youth: "Proper muscular exercise, which brings about increased strength of body and improved functioning of all its organs and parts, at the same time lending to develop ideal size and symmetrical proportioning of the skeletal muscles" ("The Complete Guide To Muscular Measurement"). A healthy body is a desirable body, and these subjects are physical perfection in the flesh. Luke Smalley died under mysterious circumstances on May 17, 2009, prematurely ending a career that was on the verge of mainstream recognition. A "must-have" edition for Luke Smalley collectors. This copy is one of the Deluxe Clamshell Box Edition, indicated as such on the Back Limitation Page, and it is very prominently and beautifully numbered, dated (in the year of publication), and signed in blue pen by the photographer: "Luke Smalley 2007". It comes with a 10 X 8 inch original color print that is also very prominently and beautifully numbered and signed in black pen on verso by the photographer. Smalley signed in his cursive handwriting for both the book and the print (instead of block letters). This edition is now sold out and highly collectible. This is one of only two copies of the Deluxe Edition still available online, is still in the publisher's original shrinkwrap, and has absolutely no flaws, a pristine beauty. A rare signed copy thus. 30 color plates, 1 original color print. One of the most brilliant American photographers of our time. A flawless collectible copy.
