Jin, Ha. BETWEEN SILENCES: A VOICE FROM CHINA. Chicago, IL: University Of Chicago Press, 1990. Hardcover. First Edition/First Printing. 79 pages. As New. Signed.

Debut collection of poems. The author's very first book, it is now considered a contemporary classic. The First Hardcover Edition. Should not be confused with the Softcover Edition which was published simultaneously with it. Published in a very small and limited first print run as a hardcover original and as part of the University of Chicago's "Phoenix Poets" Series. The First Hardcover Edition is now rare. The book is impeccably produced: Orange cloth boards with black titles embossed on the spine. Printed on archival stock paper in the United States to the highest standards. Without DJ, as issued. Presents Ha Jin's quietly triumphant debut as a Chinese writer in English, his belatedly acquired language. As is now well-known, Ha Jin is the pen name of Xuefei Jin. Ha Jin wrote these radiant poems as a graduate student at Brandeis University. They give an authentic personal voice to the unspeakable upheaval and horrors of Maoist China that at the time of their writing, only poetry could distill, do justice to, and transform as literature. Ha Jin writes as a survivor/former soldier on the front lines, facing death on a daily basis yet believing and constantly reminding himself that he was more fortunate than fellow Chinese who were sent to "re-education" camps. As a writer, Ha Jin has since moved from strength to strength, fulfilling the early promise in these poems. He is now widely regarded by critics and readers alike as one of our most valuable writers. The collection is in four parts: "Towards A Battlefield", "The Dissolution of A Kingdom", "No Tears For Love", and "Ways". One gem: "A politician must have iron hands, / although you may wear gloves over them; / just as a general must never worry about how many wronged ghosts cry/ after he puts his sword into its sheath" (Ha Jin). An absolute "must-have" title for Ha Jin collectors. This copy is very prominently and beautifully signed in black pen (in both Roman alphabet and Chinese characters) on the title page by Ha Jin. This title is now highly collectible. This is one of very few such double-signed copies of the First Hardcover Edition/First Printing still available online and has absolutely no flaws, a pristine beauty. Copies available online command as much as $300. A rare signed copy thus. Winner of the PEN/Hemingway Award for "Ocean of Words". Winner of the Flannery O'Connor Award For Short Fiction for "Under the Red Flag". Winner of the PEN/Faulkner Award and the National Book Award in 1999 for "Waiting". One of the finest living American writers. A flawless collectible copy. (SEE ALSO OTHER HA JIN TITLES IN OUR CATALOG). ISBN 0226399869. $150.00
