Struth's response is summed up by Buchloh as "the technological sublime", visceral and startling photographs of 21st-century factories, laboratories, power plants, and architectural masterworks. They "look like nothing one has ever seen before and constitute some of Struth's most powerful images. The feeling of not understanding what one is seeing, of not knowing the functions of madly tangled wires and tubes and cables and mysterious flanges and pulleys and levers, is brilliantly conveyed by these pictures of places few of us have ventured into and on whose products many of us depend. The places are not Satanic mills but belong to the world of Struth's benign photographic vision. They reassure even as they baffle" (Janet Malcolm). Struth will never photograph the equally unfathomable, Satanic military-industrial complex, as some of his predecessors photographed the Krupp factories of Nazi Germany. His images are benign, but they are not easy on the eyes or instantly likeable. Janet Malcolm ("Diana & Nikon: Essays On Photography") is right to remind us that while anyone can take beautiful photographs (if imitably so) now more than ever with the arrival of the digital camera, only an artist of Struth's visionary ambition can create images that, like all true art, are complex, original, and indeed sublime.
