Bolano, Roberto (Author) & Healy, Laura (Translator). TRES: A BILINGUAL EDITION. New York City, NY: New Directions Books, 2011. Hardcover. First Edition/First Printing. 175 pages. As New/As New.

Retrospective collection of poems and prose-poems. One of the most beautiful collections by Roberto Bolano. The first appearance of the title in English and in the United States. Precedes and should not be confused with all other subsequent editions. Published in a small and limited first print run as a hardcover original only. The First Edition is now scarce. Presents the second posthumously published collection of poems and prose-poems by Roberto Bolano, in felicitous English translations by Laura Healy (she also translated the first one, "Romantic Dogs"). Meticulously edited, this so-called Bilingual Edition (the Spanish original on the left-hand page, the English translation on the right) follows the now-mandatory presentation of poetry in translation. We do not expect prose works, in contrast, to be bilingual because it would mean too many pages and would be too cumbersome even though in principle, it is a brilliant idea. Publishers have not yet figured out a simple and elegant way of "translating" the bilingual-poetry format for all other literary translations, which is why "Tres" is a landmark of sorts: Almost half of the text is prose that fills up the page, Spanish on the left, English on the right, and the presentation actually works beautifully. As the title indicates, "Tres", is in three parts: "Prose From Autumn In Gerona", "The Neochileans", and "A Stroll Through Literature". All three are sublime: "Showcases the author's willingness to freely cross genres, with poems in prose, stories in verse, and writing that can hardly be categorized. 'Prose From Autumn In Gerona', a cinematic series of prose-poems, slowly reveals a subtle and emotional tale of unrequited love by presenting each scene, shattering it, and piecing it all back together, over and over again. 'The Neochileans' is a sort of 'On the Road' in verse, which narrates the travels of a young Chilean band on tour in the far reaches of their country. A series of short poems takes us on 'A Stroll Through Literature' and reminds us of Bolano's masterful ability to walk the line between the comically serious and the seriously comical" (Publisher's blurb). "Poetry makes me blush less" (Roberto Bolano). An absolute "must-have" title for Roberto Bolano collectors. This title is a contemporary classic. This is one of few copies of the First American Edition/First Printing still available online and has no flaws, a pristine beauty. A scarce copy thus. One of the greatest writers of our time. A flawless copy. (SEE ALSO OTHER ROBERTO BOLANO TITLES IN OUR CATALOG). ISBN 0811219275. $50.00
