Bellow, Saul. HIM WITH HIS FOOT IN HIS MOUTH AND OTHER STORIES. New York City, NY: Harper & Row, 1984. Hardcover. First Edition/First Printing. 294 pages. Fine/Fine.

The author's second collection of short stories. Now considered a modern classic. The First Hardcover Edition. Precedes and should not be confused with all other subsequent editions. Published in a small and limited first print run as a hardcover original only. The First Edition is now very scarce. Presents Saul Bellow's masterly second collection of short stories. As is now well-known, "foot-in-mouth disease" was one of Saul Bellow's foibles, of which he, too, was painfully aware, this book being his way of coming to grips with and transmutation of an insurmountable personal limitation into great literature. "Dark, devastating, and funny, Bellow's writing reflects the solitude and isolation of the immigrant experience as well as the troubled predicament of Judaism in post-war society" (Publisher's blurb). The Nobel Prize Citation is also quite eloquent: "For the human understanding and subtle analysis of contemporary culture that are combined in his work". An absolute "must-have" title for Saul Bellow collectors. This copy is very prominently and beautifully signed in black fountain pen on the title page by Saul Bellow. It is signed directly on the page itself, not on a tipped-in page, which many signed copies of the book are, nor the front free endpaper, which is surely not as collectible as a title-page signature. This title is a modern classic. This is one of very few such signed copies of the First Hardcover Edition/First Printing still available online and is in especially fine condition: Clean, crisp, and bright, a beauty. It is, quite simply, one of the most beautiful signed copies we have ever seen. Many copies available online have major flaws ("price-clipped" is endemic) yet command as much as $850. This is an accessible and lovely alternative. A rare signed copy thus. Winner of the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1976 and The National Book Foundation Medal for Distinguished Contribution to American Literature in 1990. One of the greatest American writers of the 20th century. A fine collectible copy. (SEE ALSO OTHER SAUL BELLOW TITLES IN OUR CATALOG). ISBN 006015179X. $200.00
