Franzen, Jonathan (Author/Translator) & Kraus, Karl (Author). THE KRAUS PROJECT: ESSAYS BY KARL KRAUS: THE UNCORRECTED PROOF. New York City, NY: Farrar Straus & Giroux, 2013. Softcover. First Edition/First Printing. 320 pages. Fine.

Rare Jonathan Franzen collectible item. A fine signed copy of the Uncorrected Proof of "The Kraus Project: Essays By Karl Kraus". Precedes and should not be confused with all other subsequent editions. Published in a tiny number for the exclusive use of the author and publisher. Presents, in their earliest, Uncorrected Proof state, Karl Kraus' greatest essays in new and definitive translations by Jonathan Franzen. He has also "annotated them spectacularly, with supplementary notes from the Kraus scholar Paul Reitter and the Austrian author Daniel Kehlmann. Kraus was a notoriously cantankerous and difficult writer, and in Franzen he has found his match: A novelist unafraid to voice unpopular opinions strongly, a critic capable of untangling Kraus' often dense arguments to reveal their relevance to contemporary America. Franzen is annotating Kraus the way Kraus annotated others, surveying today's cultural and technological landscape with fearsome clarity, and giving us a deeply personal recollection of his first year out of college, when he fell in love with Kraus' work. A feast of thought, passion, and literature" (Publisher's blurb). Although it's true that Karl Kraus is virtually unknown in America, it needs to be said that he has always been a significant and influential figure in modern Europe. Franzen's cultural ambassadorship (he was a Fulbright Scholar to Germany, an honor and an intellectual debt that needs to be repaid) is admirable. His willingness to take on a project that many American readers (who prejudge anything from abroad and are proud of the fact that they do not read essays) might shun is nothing less than noble. Franzen's considerable fame and following should help bring his literary idol to the audience that needs to know about and learn from Kraus the most: Our besotted Apple/Facebook/Twitter tech-addicts, young and old alike. After all, it's their loss. An absolute "must-have" title for Karl Kraus and Jonathan Franzen collectors. This copy of the Uncorrected Proof is very boldly and beautifully signed in black pen on the title page by Jonathan Franzen. It comes with a pristine copy of the Souvenir Program of the event during which his signature was obtained. This title will become a contemporary classic. As far as we know, this is the only such copy of the Uncorrected Proof available online and is in especially fine condition: Clean, crisp, and bright, a pristine beauty. A rare signed copy thus. Selected by The New Yorker Magazine as one of "Twenty Writers for the 21st Century", a selection that was prescient because he had not written anything in almost a decade. Winner of the National Book Award in 2001 for "The Corrections". One of the finest living American writers. A fine copy. (SEE ALSO OTHER JONATHAN FRANZEN TITLES IN OUR CATALOG). $50.00
