Without DJ, as issued. Published on the occasion of the landmark exhibition of the same name held at the Art Gallery of South Australia Adelaide from March 14 through May 10, 2015. Presents Trent Parke's "The Black Rose". "The culmination of seven years' work for the Adelaide-based Magnum photographer. Featuring Trent Parke's extraordinary photographs, light boxes, video, written texts, and books, the exhibition leads viewers through a visual narrative that explores ideas concerning the 'meaning of life', from both a personal and universal level. The photographs and texts in 'The Black Rose' derive from the artist's daily experiences and reflections. Small, seemingly inconsequential moments of life that normally pass us by began to take on greater significance and symbolic meaning. Seemingly random acts of chance and coincidence that occur on a daily basis became entwined within a larger narrative relating to the past and future, both for him personally and for people in general. The Black Rose is essentially a meditation on life's journeys, and the way the past infiltrates the present, and in turn can influence the future" (Publisher's blurb). "The Black Rose started in 2007 as an attempt to excavate my own histories, reflecting on a night when at the age of twelve, I witnessed my mother die of an asthma attack while my dad was at his squash night. As a result, I blanked out those first 12 years of my life, and much more. After sidestepping the issue for 27 years, a chance incident forced my hand and I began writing and taking photographs as I sought to get those memories back. Autobiographical in nature, these letters and photographs narrate the story of my life past and present, but more importantly, pose universal questions relating to our very existence. Why we are here? Where are we going, and what happens next?" (Trent Parke). Staggering ambition. Still, Trent Parke deserves credit for pushing the envelope as far as humanly possible. Together with Bill Henson (another ambitious photographer), he has put Australia on the map as a vital center of art photography, that is to say, of the most serious and ambitious contemporary art itself, which has become more, not less, photographically-based. An absolute "must-have" title for Trent Parke collectors. This copy is very boldly and beautifully signed on the front free endpaper (on the top corner of the left-hand side) by Trent Parke. It is signed directly on the page itself, not on a tipped-in page. This title will become a contemporary art photography classic. This is one of very few signed copies of the Exhibition Monograph still available online and is in especially fine condition: Clean, crisp, and bright, a pristine beauty. Copies available online command as much as $1000. However, there are also copies that have serious flaws, which is surprising considering that the book is rather new. It could only mean that viewer/readers pored over the copy over and over again. A rare signed copy thus. Lavishly illustrated with black-and-white and color plates. One of the most brilliant living artist/photographers. A flawless collectible copy. (SEE ALSO BILL HENSON TITLE IN OUR CATALOG). ISBN 1921668237. $500.00
