Aphorisms by various great Modernist writers, from Franz Kafka to Friedrich Nietzsche to Delmore Schwartz sprinkled throughout the book. Published on the occasion of the landmark retrospective exhibition that was held at the Book Beat Gallery Oak Park, Michigan and travelled on to Gallery A Stuttgart in 2013. Presents Jeffrey Silverthorne's "Photographs". Photography as memento mori. Much of the work consists of stark, relentless, and overwhelming photographs of dead people, some of them with eyes still open, which make us think they are still alive, posing for the camera. These are interspersed with rigorously composed yet erotically charged photographs of female nudes; un-posed, black-and-white snapshots of naked couples having sex; and eerily beautiful, Surrealist cutout-collages. The juxtapositions are deliberate: Silverthorne is making an explicit statement about the ineffable connection between Eros and Death. As such, he must be admired not only for sheer artistic daring, but also for the confrontational beauty of his work: "He takes on the difficult and thankless subject in trying to come to terms with society's ingrained defense against the reality of death" (The Cleveland Plain Dealer). Although some of us, particularly those of us who are older and have lived a full life, may claim that they do not fear death, the fact remains that all of us have a deep-seated (if deniable) fear of death because it IS unreal. Silverthorne helps make us confront our worst fears through his indelible images. That is surely the best "service" an artist/photographer can offer. An absolute "must-have" title for Jeffrey Silverthorne collectors. This copy of the Limited Edition of 2500 copies is very prominently and beautifully signed in black ink-pen on the title page by Jeffrey Silverthorne. It is signed directly on the page itself, not on a tipped-in page. He did not sign most copies of the book. This title is a contemporary art photography classic. This is one of very few such signed copies of the Exhibition Catalog still available online and is in especially fine condition: Clean, crisp, and bright, a pristine beauty. Please note: Copies available online have serious flaws. A rare signed copy thus. Lavishly illustrated with black-and-white and color plates. One of the most brilliant American artist/photographers of our time. A fine copy. . ISBN 1881616142. $70.00
