Without DJ, as issued. Presents Hannah Arendt's "Illuminations". Widely regarded as one of the finest essays ever written by one great writer about another: Her pioneering and magisterial essay on Walter Benjamin. It is especially notable for being originally written in English by the recent Jewish-German immigrant, who learned English as a mature adult. A 45-page essay, it was the very first critical appreciation of Benjamin ever published in English, and became the Introduction to the very first full-length collection of Benjamin's essays in English, "Illuminations", named after her piece. Susan Sontag did write (briefly) about Benjamin in "Against Interpretation" (1966). But it wasn't until almost twenty years later that she devoted a full-fledged essay on him, "Under The Sign of Saturn" (1980), the eponymous piece of her fourth collection of essays, in which she openly acknowledged her intellectual debt to Arendt's work in its entirety. Harvard University Press embarked on THE definitive Complete Works of Walter Benjamin for the 21st century. Because Arendt's and Sontag's essays were readily available elsewhere, Harvard chose not to include them. However, the new essays that accompany the new translations, while scholarly and scrupulous, all pale in comparison with Arendt and Sontag. An absolute "must-have" title for Hannah Arendt and Walter Benjamin collectors. This title is a great Issue. As far as we know, this is the only copy available online and is in fine condition: Clean, crisp, and bright, a beauty. A rare copy thus. One of the greatest philosopher/writers of the 20th century.
