His first, and only, contribution to the One Picture Book Series, a nostalgic valentine to the movies. "When I arrived in Hollywood in 1971, I was smitten by the sunshine and the Art Deco cityscape. Prominent on her streets were the lavish movie palaces, first appearing in the 1920's, that were emblematic of the immense popularity of the movies and the importance of the movie industry to the economy of Southern California. The architects of the early movie theaters believed that the movie-going experience began on the sidewalk in front of the building where the movies were viewed. The box offices were the tiny, stand-alone structure where tickets were sold. The elaborate little buildings, occupied by one or two ticket sellers, provided a preview to the opulent decoration of the interior, and reflected its style. I referred to these as 'bijou', the French word that translates as 'jewel' " (Ave Pildas). Together with its predecessor, Michael Putnam's "Silent Screens" (2000), "Bijou" pays tender, loving homage to a vanished cultural landmark, the movie theater, in all its glory. An absolute "must-have" title for Ave Pildas collectors. This copy is one of the Limited Edition, indicated as such in pen on the Back Limitation Page. It comes with a large-size, original print that is very prominently and beautifully signed in pencil on verso by Ave Pildas. This title will become a contemporary art photography classic. This is one of very few copies of the Limited Edition still available online and is in especially fine condition: Clean, crisp, and bright, a pristine beauty. A scarce signed copy thus. 11 duotone plates, 1 original print. One of the most brilliant American photographers of our time. A fine copy.
