Pamuk, Orhan (Translated by Erdag M. Goknar). MY NAME IS RED. New York City, NY: Alfred A. Knopf, 2001. Hardcover. First Edition/First Printing. 417 pages. Fine/Fine.

The author's breakthrough historical novel, the fourth to be translated into English. One of the greatest novels of our time. The first appearance of the title in the United States. Precedes and should not be confused with all other subsequent editions, particularly the British Edition, which is a softcover original only. Published in a small and limited first print run as a hardcover original only that sold out shortly after publication. Presents Orhan Pamuk's "Benim Adim Kirmizi" in a felicitous English translation by Erdag Goknar. The author's single most accessible and successful title, reissued in 2010 as a permanent "Everyman's Library" selection. "In 16th-century Istanbul, master miniaturist and illuminator of books Enishte Effendi is commissioned to illustrate a book celebrating the Sultan. Soon he lies dead at the bottom of a well. How he got there is the crux of the novel. A number of narrators give testimony to what they know about the circumstances surrounding the murder. The stories accumulate and become more detailed as the novel progresses, giving the reader not only an unconventional murder mystery but insight into the mores and customs of the time. Creatively casts the novel with colorful characters and provides a palpable sense of atmosphere of the Ottoman Empire that both history buffs and literary fans will appreciate" (Marc Kloszewski). Pamuk's books are censored and often banned outright in his native Turkey, a culture that has to strike a delicate balance between (Eastern) Islam and (Western) secularism. The threat to one's freedom makes writing even more urgent and turns talented writers into great ones. His most passionate critic/admirer in America, the late great novelist John Updike, chose "Snow" as the best novel of the year 2004, bar none. An absolute "must-have title for Orhan Pamuk collectors. This copy is very boldly and beautifully signed and dated in blue ink-pen on the title page by the author: "2018 Orhan Pamuk". It is signed directly on the page itself, not on a tipped-in page. Pamuk's signature on this copy is spectacular, one of the best we have ever seen. This title is a great book. This is one of few such signed and dated copies of the First American Edition/First Printing still available online and is in especially fine condition: Clean, crisp, and bright, a beauty. Please note: Copies available online command hundreds of dollars. This is surely an accessible and lovely alternative. A rare signed copy thus. Winner of the IMPAC Dublin Literary Award in 2003 for "My Name Is Red". Winner of the Nobel Prize for Literature in 2006, the first Turkish writer to be so deservedly honored. One of the greatest writers of our time. A fine collectible copy. (SEE ALSO OTHER ORHAN PAMUK TITLES IN OUR CATALOG). ISBN 0375406956. $200.00
