Knausgaard, Karl Ove (Translated by Don Bartlett). BOYHOOD ISLAND: MY STRUGGLE: BOOK THREE. London, England: Harvill Secker, 2014. Hardcover. First Edition/First Printing. 395 pages. Fine/Fine.

The third volume of the author's "My Struggle" six-volume novel. The first appearance of the title in the United Kingdom. The translation is published in the United Kingdom as "Boyhood Island", and also as part of the British "My Struggle" six-volume cycle. It's the other way around in the United States, where "My Struggle" takes precedence over the individual volumes. Published in a regular first print run as a hardcover original that sold out shortly after publication. The First Edition is now rare. The production values of the British Edition are superior in every respect to its American counterpart. Presents Karl Ove Knausgaard's "Min Kamp" Volume Three in a felicitous English translation. Painful (rather than idyllic) childhood memories. What is the significance of Karl Ove Knausgaard's "My Struggle"? It is the most full-fledged break from - and signals the end of - the mannerism, academicism, post-modernism, and all other pretentious and tired isms of our time. It confirms the arrival of a major and original voice in world literature, writing in deceptively simple yet eloquent prose, without crutches. It rejects our obsession with "celebrity lives", by focussing on the tiniest details of one man's ordinary life as well as deeply painful struggle. It represents nothing less than a new - and transgressive - way of writing for our time. An absolute "must-have" title for Karl Ove Knausgaard collectors. This copy is very boldly and beautifully signed, placed, and dated (shortly after publication) in black pen-marker on the title page by the author: "London 23/5/14 Karl Ove Knausgaard". It is signed directly on the page itself, not on a tipped-in page. It should also be noted that this copy has his FULL signature, which is the way he signed the first three volumes of "My Struggle" when they first came out. This title is a great book. This is one of few such signed, placed, and post-publication dated copies of the First British Edition/First Printing still available online and is in especially fine condition: Clean, crisp, and bright, a pristine beauty. It is the single most beautiful signed copy we have ever seen. Please note: Beginning with "My Struggle: Volume Four: Dancing In The Dark", extreme demand, his "rock-star" literary status, and sheer time constraint have made Knausgaard resort to an Ondaatje-like swirl of a signature, even worse than initials. Most copies available online are signed in this drastically abbreviated way, and have much less collectible value when compared to his vintage, full signature. The more he leaves of himself on the page (such as the place and date), the more collectible the signed copy is. A rare signed copy thus. One of the greatest writers of our time. A fine collectible copy. (SEE ALSO OTHER KARL OVE KNAUSGAARD TITLES IN OUR CATALOG). ISBN 1846557224. $300.00
