Oe, Kenzaburo (Translated by John Nathan). A PERSONAL MATTER. New York City, NY: Grove Press, 1968. Hardcover. First Edition/First Printing. Unpaginated. Fine/Fine.

The author's first book to be translated into English. One of the greatest books of the 20th century. The first appearance of the title in English. Precedes and should not be confused with all other subsequent editions. Kenzaburo Oe is that rare writer: A genius of language and form, a master storyteller whose themes and concerns are all deeply rooted in his personal experience, and a humble, quiet yet powerful voice. He represents the "other" Japanese writer, the complete opposite of/contrast to Yukio Mishima's aesthetic of theatricality, flamboyance, and egotistical vanity (which in no way diminish Mishima's greatness). "Kenzaburo Oe has blazed literary trails. With poetic force, he creates an imagined world where life and myth condense to form a disconcerting picture of the human predicament today" (Nobel Prize Citation). "Though thoroughly Japanese, Oe seems to me to have in him a touch of Dostoevsky" (Henry Miller). One of the key works of modern Japanese literature, this is a "must-have" title for Kenzaburo Oe collectors. This title has been out-of-print as a hardcover for a very long time. This is one of very few copies of the First English-language Edition still available online and is in fine condition: Clean, crisp, and bright. A very scarce copy thus. Winner the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1994, the second Japanese writer to win the world's most prestigious literary award. One of the greatest writers of the 20th century. A fine collectible copy. (SEE ALSO OTHER KENZABURO OE TITLES IN OUR CATALOG). $150.00
