Eggers, Dave (Editor); Minot, Susan; Weschler, Lawrence; Vowell, Sarah & Other Contributors. MCSWEENEY'S QUARTERLY # 5. New York City, NY: McSweeney's, 2000. Hardcover. First Edition/First Printing. 288 pages. As New/As New. Signed.

The Fifth Issue from the most innovative literary quarterly in America today. The "Solid Red" Variant of Issue Number 5 of McSweeney's Quarterly. This Issue is the most maddening among all of the McSweeney's Quarterlies thus far. In his continuing bid to poke fun at collectors, Dave Eggers, the mischievous publisher, mixed the variants in such a way that it is seemingly impossible to get them right short of confronting him in person and threatening him with violence if he does not reveal the combinations. There are four DJ variants: a) "Man with Visible Brain Lesion"; b) "Medical Image of Severed Human Arm"; c) "Plain White Cover" and d) "Solid Red". It also has four pictorial hard boards: a) "Medical Image of Severed Human Arm"; b) "Medical Image of Severed Human Arm Reversed"; c) "Color Photograph of Ted Koppel" and d) "Susan Minot Text". The variant DJ's and pictorial hardcovers are arbitrarily combined. The "Solid Red" DJ has the "Medical Image of Severed Human Arm Reversed" on its pictorial hardcovers. If you made it thus far, congratulations. The rest is a breeze: Magnificent contributions by Susan Minot, Paul LaFarge, Kelly Feeney, Rodney Rothman, Paul Collins, Alastair Reed, Ben Greenman, Chad Willenborg, Lawrence Weschler, R. J. Curtis, Daniel O'Mara, Lydia Davis, Paul Maliszewski, Steven Barthelme, Ben Marcus, Ann Cummins, Sarah Vowell, J. Rovert Lennon, Elizabeth Klemm, Colleen Werthmann, Jason Ockert, and Joshuah Bearman. The Series has proven itself to be the most consistently innovative and interesting literary magazine of its kind in America today. Characterized by its editor's now well-known brand of "laugh-out-loud" American sense of humor and playful, charming iconoclasm. Eggers is offering, and should be commended for it, a genuine alternative to the flavorless, politically correct mass-media magazines that have become less and less interesting or relevant to serious readers and collectors of contemporary literature. A brilliant Issue. This copy is boldly and beautifully signed and dated in black marker on the flyleaf by the editor: "Dave Eggers 10/26/02". He signed in his cursive handwriting. This title is now out-of-print and difficult to find in collectible condition. People avidly read the Quarterly so most copies are heavily soiled and in poor shape. This copy has no flaws, a pristine beauty. A very scarce signed copy thus. Some of the most brilliant living American writers. A flawless copy.
