Cunningham, Merce; Cage, John & Johns, Jasper; Sontag, Susan; Sylvester, David; Vaughan, David. CAGE CUNNINGHAM JOHNS: DANCERS ON A PLANE. New York City, NY: Alfred A. Knopf, 1990. Hardcover. First Edition/First Printing. 166 pages. Fine/Fine.

Landmark document of a one-of-a-kind exhibition-cum-collaboration among three of the greatest American artists. Published in a small and limited print run. A handsome production by Simon Rendall and Anthony d'Offay: Oversize-volume format. A tall and slim book. Bright yellow cloth boards with dark-gray titles on spine, as issued. Aphoristic essay by Susan Sontag, "Dancers On A Plane", which was adopted as the title of the exhibition and accompanying book. Essays by David Sylvester on John Cage, David Vaughan on Merce Cunningham, and Mark Rosenthal on Jasper Johns. In pictorial DJ with titles on the cover and spine, as issued. Published on the occasion of the exhibition at the Anthony d' Offay Gallery in London in 1990. The event was a multimedia show, involving the collaboration of three highly influential, still-controversial, and simply great contemporary American artists: Composer John Cage, dancer-choreographer Merce Cunningham, and artist Jasper Johns. Contains reproductions of Cage's musical manuscripts, Johns's paintings, and stupendous photographs of Cunningham's lithe and one-of-a-kind choreography. Documents their influence upon one another, celebrating close to 50 years of friendship. The addition of Susan Sontag's whimsical aphorisms, illuminating essays by art critics, captivating portrait photographs, and detailed chronologies "flesh out" the complexity of the ideas, which are as fresh, cutting-edge, and vital today as they were in 1990 and as they will always be. A "must-have" title for all serious lovers of the arts. This title has been out-of-print for a very long time. It comes with a souvenir copy of the Chicago appearance of the Merce Cunningham Dance Company, celebrating its 50th year with a national tour. This copy is in especially fine condition: Clean, crisp, and bright, a beauty. A scarce copy thus. Three of the greatest artists of the 20th century. A fine copy.
