Artist Book. The 21st title in the now-legendary "One Picture Book" Series by Nazraeli Press, one of the most superb ongoing projects of contemporary art photography. Limited Edition of 500 numbered and signed copies. Accompanied by one tipped-in, original print by the artist/photographer (hence the Series' name). An elegant production by Chris Pichler: Small-size volume format. Titles on the cover and spine, as issued. Photographs by Michael Kenna. Printed on pristine-white, archival stock paper to the highest standards. Without DJ, as issued. Presents one of the most handsome editions in the Series. "Michael Kenna's humorous and very touching One Picture Book takes the form of a photographically illustrated memoir of his childhood studies at Upholland College in England, where he studied to become a Catholic priest. 'Boarding School' offers a rare glimpse into the personal side of this internationally-known but very private artist. It culminates with an original signed print made from an early negative" (Publisher's blurb). Most of the photographs were taken by Michael Kenna at St. Joseph's College, Upholland, Lancashire, England in 2003. The portrait of Kenna as a boy there, which ends the book, was taken on November 28, 1965. Despite the nearly 40-year gap, the pictures are all redolent of "Old School" in all its English and Roman Catholic glory. One of the cliches about photography is that it shows us the way things were. "Boarding School" says that photographs can also show the way things have always been. A "must-have" title for Michael Kenna collectors. This copy is one of a Limited Edition, indicated as such on the Back Limitation Page. It comes with an original sepia-toned print that is very prominently and beautifully signed in pencil on verso by Michael Kenna. This title sold out before publication and is now very difficult to find. This is one of very few copies still available online and has no flaws, a pristine beauty. A rare signed copy thus. 8 duotone plates, I original print. One of the most influential living photographers. A flawless collectible copy.
