Sabuda, Robert. WINTER'S TALE: AN ORIGINAL POP-UP JOURNEY. New York City, NY: Simon & Schuster, 2005. Hardcover. First Edition/First Printing. Unpaginated. As New.

The pop-up artist's fourth book on the winter/holiday season. Now widely considered a pop-up classic. The First Edition. Precedes and should not be confused with all other subsequent editions. Published in a small and limited first print run as a hardcover original only. The First Edition is now scarce. A stunningly beautiful production by Robert Sabuda: Regular-sized volume format. Pictorial hard covers with green cloth overboards, silver titles embossed in front, and detailed information printed on the back. Pop-ups and text by Robert Sabuda. Promotional leaflet attached to the back. In publisher's original shrinkwrap. Without DJ, as issued. Presents Robert Sabuda's "Winter's Tale". When opened, Robert Sabuda's holiday celebration, in the form of "winter fantasy" scenes, evokes the fabled season as the crowning glory of his oeuvre. This is his fourth, and possibly finest, book on the winter/holiday season (the others being "The Christmas Alphabet", "The Twelve Days of Christmas", and "The Night Before Christmas"). There is a purity, joy, and majesty in "Winter's Tale" that is sublime: The pop-ups are rendered in pristine-white matte stock paper with touches of leafy-green, sky-blue, earth-brown, and glittering silver color papers. He subtly utilizes shiny foil in tiny bits and pieces ("glitter") on the front board and in every inside page. One of the most beautiful scenes has lighting (it is battery-operated from the back and must be switched on), a twinkling surprise "that further captures the magic of winter" (Publisher's blurb). An absolute "must-have" title for Robert Sabuda collectors. This copy is very prominently and beautifully signed, dated (in the year of publication), and inscribed in black pen on the first pop-up doublespread by the artist: "Enjoy the winter! Best wishes, Robert Sabuda 2005". The signature is directly on the page itself, not on a tipped-in page or bookplate, as many copies online are. There is no recipient named. This title is a contemporary pop-up classic. As far as we know, this is the only such signed, dated, and inscribed copy of the First Edition/First Printing available online and is in especially fine condition: Clean, crisp, and bright, a pristine beauty. It is, quite simply, the single most beautifully signed copy we have ever seen. There is a Limited Edition, which commands up to $1000. This is a lovely and accessible alternative. A rare signed copy thus. The greatest living American pop-up artist. A fine copy. (SEE ALSO OTHER ROBERT SABUDA TITLES IN OUR CATALOG). ISBN 0689853637. $50.00
