WARHOL/MAKOS: A PERSONAL PHOTOGRAPHIC MEMOIR.
New York City, NY: New American Library, 1989. Hardcover. First Edition/First Printing. 127 pages. Fine/Fine.
Landmark collection of photographs. One of the most enduring and most fascinating books on its subject, it remains the single most beautiful photographic portrait on Andy Warhol. The first appearance of the title in the United States. A brilliant production by Christopher Makos and Vincent McEvoy: Oversize-volume format. Pale gray hard boards with handsome black cloth overboards and bright green titles embossed on spine, as issued. Photographs by Christopher Makos. Foreword by Henry Geldzahler. Introduction by Glenn Albin. Printed on thick glossy stock paper in the United States to the highest standards. In pictorial DJ with titles on the cover and spine, as issued. Presents portraits of Andy Warhol solo and with friends, colleagues, members of his Factory, and numerous celebrities. Warhol insisted that there was nothing beyond the surface. He created and cultivated an intriguing public persona/mask accentuated by his famous white wig, which he wore whenever he was in public. The beauty of Makos' book is that Warhol opens up to him, and more than just a little bit, mainly because he trusted the one photographer who became his most devoted disciple. The collection has two overriding themes: Travel/Leisure and Work, both of which Warhol pursued with equal ardor. He is shown Abroad, in China, London, Paris, Milan, Germany, Switzerland, Austria, and Spain. He was just as peripatetic At Home, in the United States of America. The lovely concluding chapter shows him At Work because Warhol was probably the most workaholic artist the world has ever seen: He insisted on working even on Christmas Day. "Christopher was Andy's Andy, the bright and funny and lively and innocent side. Christopher shows us Andy having fun and being Andy. An exceptional collection of photographs, historical, graphic, tender" (Jann Wenner, Publisher, Rolling Stone Magazine). "Unmasks Warhol with honesty, humor, and style" (Bob Colacello). A gem of a book, this is a "must-have" title for Christopher Makos and Andy Warhol collectors. This presentation copy is very boldly and beautifully signed, placed, dated, and inscribed in black marker on the title page by the photographer: "Boston 1991, from Christopher Makos". In addition, Makos drew a treble clef on the left-hand page and a heart with a dollar sign in the center pierced through with an arrow on the right-hand page. All three are unmistakably Christmas/holiday symbols. The inscription fills up the title page's doublespread and refers to Makos' best wishes of joy, love, and good fortune. This title has been out-of-print for a very long time. This is the only such signed and isncribed copy we have ever seen and is in unusually fine condition: Clean, crisp, and bright. A rare, one-of-a-kind signed copy thus. One of the greatest artists of the 20th century, captured by one of the finest living American photographers. A fine collectible copy.
