Re-written virtually in its entirety by the author himself, who has also added an illuminating Introduction. Jerzy Kosinski was not happy with the First English-language translation (1965), which was heavily cut and bowdlerized. This Edition restores whole sections that did not appear in the previous one, and also incorporates changes the author subsequently made. A graphically violent and deeply affecting novel of human brutality as seen through the eyes of a young orphan during the Holocaust. One of the canonical titles of 20th century literature and a landmark of Holocaust literature, it is regarded by many critics and readers as Kosinski's finest, unsurpassable achievement. In addition, Kosinski drew a quirkily charming and self-deprecating caricature/drawing of himself: A beak-nosed profile that bears an uncanny resemblance to him, with a bird's feathered body, alluding both to the author and his novel. "Bill" is William McCarthy, the legendary Chicago book collector, who was a close personal friend of the author. This title has been out-of-print as a hardcover for a very long time and is now highly collectible.
