Kosinski, Jerzy. THE PAINTED BIRD. Boston, MA: Houghton And Mifflin, 1976. Hardcover. First Edition/First Printing. 234 pages. Fine/Fine. Signed. Slight wear to DJ spine and edges.

The definitive Revised and Complete Edition of the author's novel. Now considered a late-modern classic. Re-written virtually in its entirety by the author himself, who has also added an illuminating Introduction. Jerzy Kosinski was not happy with the First English-language translation (1965), which was heavily cut and bowdlerized. This Edition restores whole sections that did not appear in the previous one, and also incorporates changes the author subsequently made. A graphically violent and deeply affecting novel of human brutality as seen through the eyes of a young orphan during the Holocaust. One of the canonical titles of 20th century literature and a landmark of Holocaust literature, it is regarded by many critics and readers as Kosinski's finest, unsurpassable achievement. A "must-have" title for Jerzy Kosinski collectors. This presentation copy is very boldly and beautifully signed, inscribed, and dated (in the year of publication) in black marker on the front free endpaper by the author: "For Bill, Admiringly, with every best wish, Jerzy. February 1976". The author also signed his name in full on the title page: "Jerzy Kosinski". In addition, Kosinski drew a quirkily charming and self-deprecating caricature/drawing of himself: A beak-nosed profile that bears an uncanny resemblance to him, with a bird's feathered body, alluding both to the author and his novel. "Bill" is William McCarthy, the legendary Chicago book collector, who was a close personal friend of the author. This title has been out-of-print as a hardcover for a very long time and is now highly collectible. This is the only such signed and inscribed copy of the First Edition Thus available online and is in fine condition: Clean, crisp, and bright, a beauty. A rare, one-of-a-kind association copy thus. One of the greatest writers of the 20th century. A fine collectible copy. (SEE ALSO OTHER JERZY KOSINSKI TITLES IN OUR CATALOG). ISBN 0395242916. $300.00
