Rose, Aaron (Photographer) & Corn, Alfred (Contributor). AARON ROSE PHOTOGRAPHS. New York City, NY: Harry N. Abrams, 2001. Hardcover. First Edition/First Printing. 133 pages. As New/As New.

The artist/photographer's debut and retrospective collection. Destined to become a late-modern photography classic. A handsome production by Aaron Rose: Oversize-volume format in square shape. Handsome black silk cloth boards with titles embossed on cover and gray titles on spine, as issued. Photographs by Aaron Rose. Essay, "The Perpetuity of Light", by the great American poet and essayist Alfred Corn. Discussion/Interview with Aaron Rose conducted by Alfred Corn. Chronology of the artist/photographer's life appended at the end. Printed on thick coated stock paper to the highest standards. In pictorial DJ with titles on the cover and spine, as issued. Presents the work of an American original, whose work over the last thirty years was discovered in 1997 when five of his prints were exhibited at the Whitney Biennial. Although he studied with such great photographers as Lisette Model, Alexey Brodovitch, and Josef Breitenbach, Aaron Rose is largely self-taught and has been a recluse, going assiduously about his work unconcerned by the feverish and convulsive New York photography and art scenes of the latter half of the 20th century. The book presents some of his finest and most representative work in chronological order and according to the subjects that primarily interested the artist/photographer during consecutive periods of his life: "Shells", "New York City", "Milky Way", "Reflections", "Unterholz", "Sun and Clouds", and "Sky". Despite his changing interests, there is a continuity in the body of work (which number more than 25, 000 photographs), and it is an artist's lifelong exploration of the relation between imagination and reality; between reality and abstraction. As Corn points out in his illuminating essay, if all modern philosophy is an attempt to understand why there is being instead of nothing, it is probably not too much to say that Rose's project is an attempt to understand why there is imagination instead of reality. There is a stillness and quiet in the entire work which belie any chosen subject: Rose's New York City is a place entirely imagined by him and yet, at the same time, the photographs are of the real New York. By the same token, his lyrical photographs of our universe "are miracles of light and chemistry. A magician who builds his own cameras and mixes complex developing emulsions incorporating exotic metals". "He has created one of the most remarkable oeuvres of any photographer in modern times" (The New York Times). An enigmatic, poetic achievement. A "must-have" title for Aaron Rose collectors. This title has been out-of-print for some time. This is one of few copies still available online and has no flaws, a pristine beauty. A scarce copy thus. 100 color plates. One of the finest American artist/photographers of the 20th century. A flawless copy. . ISBN 0810942240. $45.00
