Michals, Duane (Artist/Photographer) & Kozloff, Max (Writer/Editor/Curator).
DUANE MICHALS: NOW BECOMING THEN.
Altadena, CA: Twin Palms Publishing, 1990. Hardcover. First Edition/First Printing. 156 pages. Fine/Fine.
Landmark retrospective collection of photographs. One of the artist/photographer's most beautiful collections. Limited Edition of 6000 copies. The true first. Precedes and should not be confused with all other editions. Originally issued without the wraparound band, which was subsequently printed for the Second Edition, and is erroneously regarded as a First Edition point. An austerely elegant production by Duane Michals and Jack Woody: Oversize-volume format. A tall and thick book. Purple-gray silk cloth boards with black titles embossed on cover and spine, as issued. Photographs, photo-narratives, and text by Duane Michals. Edited and curated with an Essay by Max Kozloff. List of Plates, Bibliography, and Exhibition Schedule appended at the end. Printed on thick uncoated stock paper in rich gravure by The Toppan Printing Company in Tokyo, Japan to the very highest standards. The gravure printing makes one want not only to touch but to gently caress, ever so gently, the beautiful pages of the book. In stark black DJ with white titles on the cover and spine, as issued. Published on the occasion of the travelling exhibition of the same name in 1990 through 1993. Presents the artist/photographer's now-classic photographs and photo-narratives, Michals' distinctive narrative style at its most representative and finest. Culled and personally edited by him from his previous collections, with the scrupulous assistance of Max Kozloff, here are his poignant, witty, and deeply moving black-and-white photographs, with handwritten captions by Michals himself of several vignettes and stories, including the brilliant "Amazing Rick Dick, Super Sleuth", featuring Richard Gere, Joel Gray, Cindy Crawford, and Erin Taylor. Lavishly illustrated with black-and-white photographic sequences, many of them now famous and reproduced in countless anthologies, especially those of a sexually explicit nature. Photographed, as always, in the tender, introspective, and lyrical Duane Michals manner. The idea of The Past In The Present has fascinated and haunted almost all modern artists. Even a major ironist like Ed Ruscha has been touched by it, as evidenced by his new (and stupendous) Artist Book, "Then & Now". A "must-have" title for Duane Michals collectors. This copy is prominently and beautifully signed in black pen on the title page by Duane Michals. This title has been out-of-print for a long time. It was reissued in Second and Third Editions, which are now also sold out. This is one of very few signed copies of the true First Edition still available online and is in fine condition: Clean, crisp, and bright. Signed copies sell for as much as $700. A rare signed copy thus. 130 sheetfed gravure plates. One of the finest living American artist/photographers. A fine collectible copy. (SEE ALSO OTHER DUANE MICHALS TITLES IN OUR CATALOG).
