First issued by the United States Postal Service (USPS) on November 18, 1999. An elegant production by USPS: The First Day of Issue is issued as an elegant cream envelope with the commemorative stamp itself pasted on the upper-right-hand corner. The date of issue is stamped in front. The original logo of "Women's Rights Movement: Living The Legacy" is also reproduced prominently in front. The Feminist Movement is one of the very few genuine achievements of the 20th century. Its legacy will endure precisely because, not in spite of, continuing efforts to turn back the clock and destroy the enormous gains women have made in the last hundred years. Rita Dove was Poet Laureate and Consultant to the Library of Congress from 1993 to 1995. She has received every major literary and academic honor, among them the Pulitzer Prize in 1987 and the National Medal for the Humanities in 1996.
