Goldin, Nan (Artist/Photographer); Mueller, Cookie (Subject) & Costa, Guido (Contributor). NAN GOLDIN TEN YEARS AFTER: NAPLES 1986-1996. Zurich, Switzerland: Scalo, 1988. Softcover. First Edition/First Printing. 141 pages. As New.

Retrospective collection of color photographs. The first and only edition. A brilliant production by Nan Goldin: Small-size volume format in square shape. It has the deliberate look and feel of a "travel guide" book. Glossy pictorial softcovers with titles on cover and spine, as issued. Photographs by Nan Goldin. Text by Cookie Mueller and Guido Costa. Printed on thick coated stock paper in Zurich, Switzerland to the highest standards. Without DJ, as issued. Continues the peripatetic and restless journey Nan Goldin began in Asia (Bangkok and Manila) through Naples, Italy. Many of the people in this collection (especially Cookie Mueller) originally appeared in her masterpiece, "The Ballad of Sexual Dependency". AIDS has led to the premature and unbearable death of many of them (including Mueller), which Goldin chronicles, in the photographic narrative style she has used with skill, maturity, and emotional resonance. The universal primacy of erotic desire as seen through intimate friendships, casual sexual encounters, and full-fledged romances, what Goldin herself beautifully calls "coupling", shadowed by a devastating illness, is the collection's powerful theme. As the title suggests, the book is (like all of Goldin's work) also about time, its passage, the wear and tear it inflicts on every "coupling", which often ends tragically and just as often, also happily. Together with "I'll Be Your Mirror", "Desire By Numbers", and "The Devil's Playground", this is her finest work since "The Ballad of Sexual Dependency". A "must-have" title for Nan Goldin collectors. This copy is prominently and beautifully signed in black pen on the title page by Nan Goldin. The artist/photographer recently returned to the United States after living in Europe for the greater part of the last six years (2000-2006). She made a very rare, sensational Chicago appearance, and a copy of the Souvenir Announcement comes with this book. This is an Import title, was not widely distributed in the United States, and has been out-of-print for a very long time. Most copies have major flaws and the publisher's flaw of the cover lamination peeling off. This is the only signed copy available online and has no flaws, a pristine beauty. A rare signed copy thus. Nan Goldin's "The Ballad of Sexual Dependency" is regarded by critics as the most important photography book since "Diane Arbus". One of the most influential living artist/photographers. A flawless collectible copy. (SEE ALSO OTHER NAN GOLDIN TITLES IN OUR CATALOG). ISBN 3931141799. $150.00
