Brown, Dan.
THE DA VINCI CODE.
New York City, NY: Doubleday, 2004. Hardcover. First Edition/First Printing. 454 pages. Fine/Fine.
Rare Dan Brown set. Signed copy of the First Hardcover Edition (2003) and copy of the First "Special Illustrated Edition" (2004). The author's second "Robert Langdon" novel. One of the most phenomenal cultural events of our time. The true first. Precedes and should not be confused with all other subsequent editions. Published to enormous popular acclaim, the book topped and stayed on bestseller lists and may have alienated many people about the Roman Catholic Church, which has predictably condemned the book. There is no doubt that "The Da Vinci Code" is ultimately the author's thinly veiled "confession" of his loss of faith in the Roman Catholic Church. That is what is so offensive about it to other Catholics, to be told that their faith is based on fiction. "The Da Vinci Code" is fiction because its subject is fictional. There is always someone attacking both the Church and Opus Dei, but Dan Brown, once a believer and therefore an insider, hit a very raw nerve. The basis of a major film by Ron Howard, with Tom Hanks as Harvard symbologist Robert Langdon and a terrific international cast led by Audrey Tautou, Ian McKellen, and Jean Reno. This copy is very boldly and beautifully signed in black fountain pen on the title page by Dan Brown. The author made several appearances to promote the book's small initial release. Given its subsequent unprecedented success, he has said that he regrets he will not be able to do any more public signings. The only other living writer who faces a similar dilemma is J. K. Rowling, and she stopped doing signings a long time ago. This title is now in innumerable multiple printings, has sold more than 100 million copies, and counting. This is a copy of the true First Edition: April 2003 publication date, "First Edition" and complete number line ending in 1 on the Copyright Page, and original price of $24.95 on the DJ flap. This is one of extremely few signed copies of the First Hardcover Edition still available online and is in especially fine condition: Clean, crisp, and bright, an unread collector's copy. Signed copies of the First Edition now sell for as much as $5000 online, have made headlines, and will only go up in value over time. This set includes a brand-new copy of the First "Special Illustrated Edition", which is also now in multiple subsequent printings. A rare signed set thus. One of the finest living American writers. A fine collectible copy. . ISBN 0385504209. $1500.00
