Starrett, Vincent (Editor). THE WAVE: A JOURNAL OF ART AND LETTERS. Chicago, IL: Steen Hinrichsen, 1923. Magazine. First Edition/First Printing. 50 pages. Very Good+. Restored with archival tape. Chipping on cover edges.

Rare copy of the legendary Chicago literary and art magazine. Volume 1, Issue 6, June 1923. The last of the first and only run. Pictorial softcovers, as issued. Contributions by various writers and artists. Without DJ, as issued. The first issue of The Wave was greeted with critical acclaim. Will Ransom wrote to Hinrichsen about the issue: "Of course I bought a copy as soon as it was on sale and think you got off to a flying start. I hope its success will warrant your using a better grade of paper on the next number, my only objection to the first one". Hinrichsen did not update the paper, as the condition of this item shows, but he continued to receive support from Chicago's literary and artistic communities. The avante-garde was not always acceptable to others in the city, however. The U. S. Post Office would not mail this last issue, which appeared in June 1923, until a vaguely outlined nude female on the back cover was re-done with the woman wearing a bathing suit. To drive home the point, the publisher was compelled to print the following proviso: "Note to Dealers: Only copies with bathing suit permitted thru the mails". A "must-have" title for Modern First collectors. This is the only copy of this magazine available online and is in very good condition. A rare copy thus. Illustrated with charcoal drawings. One of the most important American literary and artistic magazines of the 20th century. . $150.00
